Biological studies were included in the curriculum of Scott Christian College with the advent of Biology Department in 1929 with Mr.A.J. Cherian as its first Head. The Biology Department evolved into UG Zoology Department in 1956, with affliation to Travancore University. The Department became a Post –Graduate Centre for Zoology in 1980 and M.Phil was introduced in 1985. The Department became a full fledged UGC recognized Research Centre in1996 with provision for Ph.D students to pursue their research studies.

To inculcate in young minds genuine interest and motivation in animal studies and research stressing the indispensable role of biology in alleviating human problems. To instill in them love towards nature and the urge for biodiversity conservation and train them as responsible Indian citizens with concern and respect for all fellow humans irrespective of caste, creed, religion, nationality and sex. To mould them into humane citizens with a global outlook.
To give quality biology education at the graduate, masters and research level through teaching, technical training, consultation with the experts, field studies and laboratory visits. To each and demonstrate to the students at different levels the importance of moral and social values professional integrity and ethics.
Department achivements The Department has so far catered to about 2000 UG, 600 PG, 250 M.Phil and 40 Ph.D students in the regular stream and hundreds of part time and correspondence course PG and M.Phil students of Annamalai University (Twinning programme), Priyar University, Vinayaka Mission University, Alagappa University and Bharathidasan University. The Alumini of the Department are in enviable positions all over the world.

There are 14 teaching staff members, one UGC Emeritus Professor and five non teaching staff in the Department. The staff have published more than 400 research papers in various fields of specialization.

The staffs of the Department have completed seven major and minor projects successfully while two UGC and two BRNS funded projects are ongoing along with a student project sponsored by DSIR, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
Research students and faculty members are involved in active research pertaining to the fields of Radiobiology, sericulture, non-conventional pest management, cheap microbial media, spore preservatives, bioactive compounds, biopesticides, bio and phytoremediation, industrial waste management and insect pest bionomics. The research students have access to a full fledged research laboratory.

The Zoology Department has an aviary, apiary, vermiculture facility, rain water fed-ornamental fish culture, butterfly vivarium and mulberry gardens. Earn while you learn programme. Underprivileged students involve themselves in the earn while you learn programme of the department and take part in eco- restorative activities like cover recycling, paper cover making, tamarind paste/ powder and jack seed powder preparation and vermicompost packing.
